AI chatbots are increasingly positioned as mental health supports. This study focuses directly on these systems and what users experience when interacting with them. One finding stood out clearly: emotional relief often appeared before users reported trust in the chatbot itself.

Reductions in distress occurred early in the interaction. Relief did not depend on confidence in accuracy, depth, or long-term usefulness. The emotional response came first.

The study also makes clear that relief alone has limits. AI chatbots supported emotional regulation and some health behaviors, but they did not replicate the depth or adaptability of human care.

Relief created space. It did not replace relationship, insight, or sustained therapeutic work. The distinction helps clarify where AI support fits and where it falls short.

AI chatbots may not earn trust first, but they can still change how distress is held. That emotional shift shapes what becomes possible next.
